10-mile swim from Sand Harbor, Nevada to Skylandia Beach, Tahoe City, CA.
Almost 240 teams of 6 members competed in this annual event, founded in 1977, by the Host Olympic Club. Under warm weather conditions 3 perennial contenders raced for the overall title of the fastest team. This year’s winner was the Tahoe 11 Milers (3 hours and 8 minutes). They are an all-star team consisting of past and present team members from the United States and Germany including Olympic Silver Medalist Thomas Lurz.
The RCP Tiburon Milers team Captained by 65-year-old Bob Placak was 2nd place (3 hours and 15 minutes) and Host Olympic Team was 3rd overall (3 hours and 22 minutes). The 1st place team broke the course record set by the RCP Tiburon Milers set in 2008 at 3 hours and 10 minutes. This year’s course was shorter than the decades long previous course. Placak’s team is from California and Tennessee. Placak, a longtime resident of Tiburon has competed in this race 35 times since 1986 and has been on the overall winning team almost 20 times over the years. Also competing was local resident and past Tiburon Mayor, Andrew Thompson. His Marin County Team, Frozen Tuna, placed 6th in the Men’s 300 years+ age group division at time of 4 hours and 35 minutes. Team Captain was Ivo Delmis.
